Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Bronwyn Doherty

My name is Bronwyn Doherty. I am 23, from Glasgow and this is my transformation story!

Before Bromwyn’s Transformation

At the start of this year, I was in a really bad place. I had just been dumped, cheated on, the whole shebang. Having been in a relationship where I had been treated pretty badly but was convinced everything would be fine eventually, I started to feel like it was all my fault.

I already suffered quite badly from depression and anxiety so being overweight and constantly feeling I wasn’t good enough was just the icing on the cake. Turns out being dumped was the best thing to ever happen to me.

After having been the ULTIMATE dumpee cliche, I hadn’t eaten or slept for 5 days. I ended up collapsing in work and that was the kick up the butt I needed. I realised that this wasn’t me. I wasn’t that person and I didn’t recognise myself anymore.

Bronwyn’s Amazing Transformation Story

The next day I was up with a good breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast and I was a tag along at my gym with my brother in law. I loved it so much. I lifted more than I thought I would and realised I was much stronger than I gave myself credit for.

My bro-in-law then took me on as a project for his PT course and set me up a training plan. I had already got my nutrition down just out of luck to begin with. Not sure if it was the not eating or the desire to change because I was learning about my body but it was really easy for me to not eat rubbish. I then started learning more about what it means to nourish and fuel your body.

To stay consistent, it was really important to me to remind myself of how far I’ve come and how far I want to go. I knew that if i wanted to reach a healthy weight that I would have to keep my focus. It became quite easy after a while because not only was I changing my lifestyle to improve my health and fitness, it had become a passion and I loved it so much that I would be second nature.

Bronwyn’s Awesome Transformation Results

I had lost 2.5 stone which is what I wanted to lose to be a healthy weight and from then on it was just about building more muscle and sculpting my body the way I wanted it.

Since transforming my body, I am happier than I have ever been before. Not because I was skinnier or I looked better but because I felt healthier, stronger, more confident. Most importantly, I am not depressed anymore. Going through this journey with my mental health as a focus has just inspired me to become an advocate for dealing with depression and anxiety in the fitness industry (#2016goals)

Bronwyn’s Advice For You & Your Transformation

Trust the process, you WILL see and feel a difference. Celebrate the little victories and the non scale victories and above all, don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 23. Much like life, it’s a journey NOT a destination. We all walk a different path and your main focus should be yourself and not some insta famous fit person. These people can be great to look up to and aspire to but at the end of the day everyone is different. Be yourself x

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Andreas Christou

Hi my name is Andreas David Christou I am 20 years old and i am originally from Cyprus. But my current location is Scotland, Edinburgh, Musselburgh, EH21 6UD.

Before Andreas’ Transformation

Before I began my journey from fat to fit I was unhealthy, I had no motivation what so ever, I was over weight and not happy with myself as a person, I had no confidence and I was being bullied.
So one day i decided i was tired of all of this and wanted to make a change to my life.

Andreas’ Amazing Transformation Story

I joined my local gym 5 years ago thats when my journey began. At the beginning my main goals where just to lose weight but for the first year I was making many mistakes in terms of training, nutrition and rest.
I had no one to show me the proper way to diet and train so i started buying as many books about nutrition and training as possible, searching the internet following different training principles and programs.
From then on I realised knowledge is power the more I knew the better my body got because I’ve tested nearly every training principle and dieting strategy possible.
I have failed many times and thats why i have succeeded and still progressing. I learned from my mistakes. I try to stay consistent day in and out.
I trained 6 times a week with one active rest day. I did 1 hour weight training and 30 min cardio on my training days. I have to say HIIT cardio is what helped me shed the most amount of body fat without sacrificing muscle mass.

Andreas’ Transformation Results & New Goals

I started off 95kg fat and currently im at 87kg with muscle mass 12% body fat. I was determined to crush my goals daily and become my best self.
My main goal now is to create symmetry and keep my waist tight. I eat, sleep, breath consistency so that was never a problem for me my results kept me moving forward.
I have never really had an end result because every time i reached a goal i set a new one although im very proud of what i have achieved so far. Transforming my body feels amazing and thats why i also want to help other people achieve their goals and change there lives.

Andreas’ Advice For You & Your Transformation

My very best advice to give someone wanting to transform there bodys and lives in 2015 is one word CONSISTENCY. The more consistent you stay with your training and your dieting the faster you will see results and that will drive you even more to reach your end goal.

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Debi McKay

My name is Debi McKay, I am from Glasgow, 21, and this is my transformation story!

Before Debi’s Transformation

Before I started training I would say I was very insecure of my appearance, and after having a little girl, lost my shape to my body. But soon after, I was so determined just to get into a fitness shape!
Everything I googled online was fitness inspired & I just always wanted to be classed as like a fitness model. I know I’m still no where near yet but I can genuinely see it in my near future that I wouldn’t have even dreamed about a year ago.
Inspirational Transformation Debi McKay

How Debi Felt During Her Transformation

I find it so amazing now how much I understand my body, training and eating. If I want to enhance an area in my body I can just focus on it and change and grow. It amazes me how if you put your mind to something you can just go and do it!
And now to be part of the SFN EXPO team for next year just makes me know that you never know what’s round the corner if you just keep up the grind! It’s been the most exciting year and I genuinely can not wait to see what next year has in store!!

Debi’s Advice For You & Your Transformation

I’m still not quite at my goal yet but I remember looking at fitness models and be like I want to be that girl with tha booty, as silly as that sounds! But now I am so chuffed to be able to have that, and just be confident in myself!

But my advice to someone wanting to change is if you’re not happy within themselves only they can make the change.. If it gets you down so much about it then you just need to make that your determination and make it your lifestyle rather than just something short term!

Think of food as fuel rather than craving all them sweets & just love the process.

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Matt Gregory

Meet Matt Gregory, who did his transformation in just 12 weeks as part of the USN Body Makeover Challenge!

Before Matt’s Transformation

I started the USN Body Makeover Challenge as I came to the realisation that I had lost my way and needed a change. I am an ex gymnast and loved training. With the change in my job and working shifts I found that I was snacking and eating badly due to my body clock not being right and the constant changing of wake up and sleep that came with the job.

I needed a change and I needed a kick start. Whilst at a fitness convention I got talking to a USN member of staff who gave me a leaflet on the USN Body Makeover Challenge. Talking to my Fiancée when I got home she said that I should give it a go.

With my wedding being next year I thought that this would be a good start. I thought to myself that, I know I will be amazed with my fiancée when she walks down the aisle on our day but what if I could actually wow her as well and be in the best shape of my life on our special day. This motivated me to change. I would do anything for her but I also knew I had to do this for myself too.

The best part is that I had her support from day 1. She took my start photos and in my head I thought “you will see a different man at the end of this!”.

Matt’s Amazing Transformation Story

From the very first day of the USN Body Makeover Challenge she would ask me what I was eating and if I was doing well with my calories, macros and how my training sessions were going. This continued for the full 12 weeks.
Throughout the weeks I pushed hard and planned ahead, making sure the food being bought was right for me, that I was eating right, that my sessions were planned and ready to go to the gym, all my kit was ready for the gym and that my food was logged.

The weeks passed by and my strength was getting better and my weight was going down well. Then as it does, and when your testing your body illness hit in the form of an ear and sinus infection. This made it incredibly hard to train. This lasted 2 1/2 weeks to get back in the gym and get back to where I was. The training felt harder and I felt different. What was the worst part was that it was in weeks 9 – 11 that it hit…. almost at the finish line and my body cracks.

Before this I was trying new food and really enjoying it. What I have changed even today as I write this is how I planned my meals and how in advance I do this. My plastic box cupboard has doubled in size ready to prepare meals and I still make sure that I am ready when I leave the house, no snacking or going hungry for me.

This change also includes what I do on my work breaks, before I would have my break at work and decide to go and eat, now I train in my break, even if this is a short run it helps me. The other change is people around me. 1 colleague at work is always asking me about diet and exercise and when it comes to meals he asked my opinion, and I even got him tracking it.

My biggest surprise in the USN Body Makeover Challenge was how much it would inspire and motivate the people around me. My dad completed the Great south run as did I and he is now asking me my advice on training and wants me compete with me in a half marathon next year and then do another for his 60th birthday in 2017! I always looked up to him as an inspiration for losing 7 stone but now we can train together! My mum as well has seen the change in me and comments on how broad I look and muscular which is nice, I think she also likes that she doesn’t have to foot the bill for all my food these days too.

Matt’s USN Body Makeover Challenge Results

At the start of the USN Body Makeover Challenge I wanted to get to 85kgs and lose body fat. This I reached starting at 95kgs and finally ending on my final day on 86kgs. Just short but close enough in my eyes to continue on. I also went from 30% body fat down to 24% so I see that as an achievement. The goals I didn’t set were what weight I would finally be lifting, squatting etc. This was a surprise when I looked at my training diary and results. I even managed to get my chin ups back that had been lost over the years.

I always said that this was the start I needed to go on. My next plans are to continue to lose weight and tone up more ready for my wedding in June 2016. I have always wanted to make my fiancée proud of me and as I am going to me marrying the love of my life I want to look good doing it, have good photos of the day and on the honeymoon.

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Nikki Denny

My name is Nikki Denny, I’m 52, and I’m from Bridge of Allan. A few years ago I decided to turn my life around and now at 52 years old, I’ve extremely transformed my physique and my career ambitions, tackling my fitness instructor level 2 qualification just last month!

Before Nikki’s Transformation

I was a square box shaped person, bored with life and with little or no ambition, goals or future plans.

Inspirational Transformation Nikki Denny

Nikki Denny’s Amazing Transformation Story

I did a few unrelated things to keep pushing myself and keep me on track:

• Took part in the USN Body Makeover Challenge twice transforming my nutrition and following a training that adapted with my progress.
• Took on the roll of SFN EXPO Brand Ambassador to embed myself in the fitness industry.
• Undertook and passed my Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification with SFN EXPO exhibitor Fitness Training Scotland with plans to go on to take my Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification and a nutrition qualification to share my knowledge with others like myself

I broke down larger goals into smaller more manageable ones. Shared my journey publicly to keep myself accountable. Took advice and support from anyone willing to offer it. I still do!

I dropped from a 16/18 to a 10/12. Learned a lot about myself and astounded myself with what I am capable of. Earned Joint Overall Top Performing Brand Ambassador for SFN EXPO 2015. Passed my Level 2 Gym Instructor Course with a good pass. Became more focused and decided on a future in the fitness industry.

I now feel accomplished. Proud of myself. Proud to inspire others and most of all happy with my future plans.

Nikky’s Advice For You & Your Transformation

Target your tomorrow nobody else’s. Tell others of your plans and progress to make yourself accountable. Nobody is perfect so don’t expect yourself to be, cut yourself some slack. Most of all enjoy the journey and look back only to see how far you have come.

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Kyle Mercer

My name is Kyle Mercer, I’m from Dunshelt, Fife and I lost 11 and a half stone in a year and 4 months.

Before Kyle’s Transformation

I used to drink alot, eat rubbish food like mcdonalds and chip shop foods and I was just in such a bad place. I knew what I wanted to do and that was to lose weight I didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it.

Kyle Mercer weight loss transformation

Kyle Mercer’s Amazing Transformation Story

I started off slow and started to eat porridge and things started from there. I managed to keep it consistant because I saw results and I wanted them to keep coming. I always said that I would join the gym in Glenrothes and I did when it opened. Things got much easier after that.

I felt amazing after the transformation because I didn’t think that it would happen. I have lost the weight of a person it’s weird to think about.

Kyle’s Advice For You & Your Transformation

I would tell someone that you only live once and you really need to think about your health and the way you want to look. I would now say anyone can acheive success their wanting if they put 100% effort into it.

I would also say dont ego lift, meaning don’t try start lifting a really heavy weight just because you’ve seen someone else lifting it. You need to start of light and then work yourself up. You will see results quicker that way and feel much better with yourself from starting at the bottom.

I have also been in the paper for my weight loss if you want to find out more. Type ‘Kyle Mercer weight loss’ into google and many stories and pictures of my weight loss will come up. I didn’t really have a goal at the start I just wanted weight loss. Its so much more now I feel I owe the gym so much as it has transformed me in to the better person I am today.

I now use the gym 5 days a week and eat up 6 meals a day. Each day i’m building more muscle towards my next goal!

6 Dietary Habits Explored – An SFN Sisterhood Experiment

Everywhere we look there is advice about what we should and shouldn’t eat. I have read blog after blog detailing intricate diets, new superfoods and even ways to consume our food including using cutlery. Really? Own up who has tried it?

Why Explore Dietary Habits?

It’s so hard for the everyday woman to have faith in what they read about, let alone being able to relate to the writer. Often foods and approaches are celebrity endorsed, or part of a new media fad, all with advertising agendas.

While we are all overwhelmed and drowning in information overload, what we are reading and listening to has drifted away from the basics. You no longer read up to date articles about vegetarian or plant based diets, as many like to call it now, because we are too busy moving on.  Veganism is often met with an eye roll and a dash for the nearest exit. Secretly I wondered if other women wanted to know what it was all really like.  Without the animal torture videos or pushy speeches, that leave you wanting to eat meat, just to prove your rights.

No Heavy Science or Bias – Just Testing Common Dietary Habits

I want to make it clear in this very first article. I am not attached to any single nutritional approach. I will say that again to be clear, I am not attached to ANY nutritional approach.

I believe in doing what makes me happy, healthy and satisfied. It is for that reason I came up with the idea of giving various diets a go and sharing my findings, without heavy science, without bias and without trying to sell a single soul anything. This will be an honest account, from an average woman, for all my fellow average women out there.

It’s not just plant based diets and dietary habits, I intend to explore. I will also be trying out those prepped meals that we all see on Instagram and feel rather jealous of. I certainly never get what I consider a fair review on them as the only people I see shouting about them, are people who are sponsored by the company and sent the meals for free.  I have made the Paleo approach last on my list, just to try and create as bigger gap between the vegan month and the meaty month, otherwise my gut may just have a fit!

The Plan Is…

So let me outline the plan I committed to just before Christmas and then spent the whole of Christmas wondering what the heck had I got myself in to!

For 28 day stints, I will follow a variety of approaches and will be writing, vlogging and sharing the whole journey. I will include tracking my weight, measurements and perhaps even things like my blood pressure.  This is NOT a weight loss experiment, but I do expect there to be some fluctuations.  I will also be tracking my meals on My Fitness Pal so that I, we, can see how each approach affects what I eat and the breakdown of nutrients.

Month By Month Dietary Habits TimeTable

January – Vegetarian

February – Vegan

March – Flexible/IIFYM

April – Intermittent Fasting

May – Prepared and delivered meals

June – Paleo

At each stage I will be working with an expert in that area, not to follow their principles but to soak up inspiration, get insider tips and generally because I think it will be fun. If they have a cookbook I will try out there recipes and be warned, if I don’t like something I am going to tell you guys!

Why Am I Doing This For The SFN Sisterhood?

The SFN sisterhood is all about breaking the mould and the rules that we never signed up to. I am doing it in the order above because it’s what suits me and is what I will find easiest to transition from. Now if you get bothered by spelling errors, commas in the wrong places and like to nit-pick over terminology, this blog aint for you. I won’t be publishing everything I do via a copywriter or getting my videos nicely edited. However if there is a MUA out there? Just kidding.  What you see is what you get, you’ve been warned!

So if you’ve always wondered what a veggie or paleo diet is like and want to read an unedited unbiased account, here is where it all begins.

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Gemma Young

Meet Gemma Young, 26, from Edinburgh who lost over 3 stone. This is her incredible transformation story!

Before Gemma’s Transformation

I had no self confidence, had no motivation and a very unhealthy lifestyle of going out drinking every weekend and unhealthy diet.

Inspirational Transformation Story Gemma Young

Gemma’s Amazing Transformation Story

I got a personal trainer, cleaned up my diet and counting my macros, stopped eating any processed foods and meal prepped so I was always prepared and started weight training 5 times a week and boxing twice a week.

Seeing results in myself kept me going, I soon became my own motivation and inspiring others to do the same.

I have lost over 3 stone, dress size 18 to a 10 and now have more goals set in place for 2016 to compete in bikini fitness.

Gemma’s Advice For You & Your Transformation

I feel amazing, I’m so much more mentally and physically stronger than I have ever been.

For you, do it now. Don’t wait for Monday, or until after the weekend just get it done and stop making excuses.

Transformation’s of the Year 2015: Lynne Cornell

I’m Lynne cornell, age 43, and I live in kendal Cumbria. This is my transformation story!

Before Lynne’s Transformation

I’ve lost alot of weight over 3 years but 2015 is the year I feel has seen the biggest change physically + mentally.

I had reached a stale mate after Xmas and I was weighing in at around 83kg in Jan and stayed same weight until April when I gained another 2 after a tough month after a family death… So in in may I weighed in at 85kg.

I had a PT already but told him I wanted to get really serious about nutrition as well as my training so we decided he would give me a diet plan to follow and we would monitor weight regularly to see how it went and make changes if and when we felt needed it..

Inspirational Transformation Story - Lynne CornellI also joined the usn bodymakeover challenge so as well as Jason (my PT’s) support. I had the rest of the group as well to inspire and motivate me..

I completed 2 challenges and in total went from 85kg to 67kg and from 34% bodyfat to 27%.. and dropped a lot of inches all over.

My confidence grew immensely over this time. I’m so happy and healthy and feel so much younger and full of energy.

My goals were to look and feel the best I could after both challenges and become somebody who could help and inspire others to do what I have done.

Lynne’s Advice To Your Own 2016 Transformation Story

My advice to anybody would be set small realistic goals at first.  Its easier to work towards smaller goals and make new ones as you reach them than have a long goal ahead of you that can seem  unachieveable at tough times.

Get a good support group either by joining a challenge or telling family and friends your goals and ask for help and support.

My life is so different now. I’m an SFN EXPO 2016 ambassador, never thought I’d be anything like that.. My life has changed massively.
